The Volunteer Simulated Patient (SP) Program is an initiative developed by UNSW Medicine & Health for the Medicine Program, helping to develop our junior medical students into the leading doctors of the future.
Should you choose to be involved in the program, you will work with junior students either in our purpose- built clinical skills centre or online – or both!
One major focus of interactions is to develop students' communication skills. This includes their ability to initiate and maintain respectful interactions with patients and to develop rapport so that patients feel able to divulge all relevant information during a consultation. To this end, you will play the role of a patient with a certain problem, and with a scenario provided for the purpose. On campus, sessions may alternatively focus on being physically examined. Some sessions involve both role playing and physical examination.
Sessions on campus take place Monday to Friday only, every two months or so and never last longer than 2 hours. You register each time the sessions are coming up, so you have total flexibility to opt in or out across the year.
If you are keen to volunteer from home and support our students by not only playing the patient but providing a written assessment, then our online platform is an option. As a Simulated Patient Assessor (SPA) you will need to have a working camera and microphone, strong internet connection and be reasonably confident with using some simple technology – with support provided.
SPs can also take part in end of phase exams at various clinical schools located around Sydney, which is very much appreciated and rewarding.

Our Location and Getting Here (Campus Sessions) We are located in the Clinical Skills Centre of the Wallace Wurth Building of UNSW Medicine & Health in Randwick, corner of Botany and High Streets. The easiest and fastest way to get here is generally by public transport: bus or light rail. Due to the new health precinct, traffic congestion has increased around the upper campus. There is some public parking available on the rooftop carpark of the Botany Street carpark (lifts are available), Gate 11, which is a 5 minute walk from the Wallace Wurth Building. Parking will be arranged upon request.
