An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a unique identifier that enables a publication to be distinguished and located. An ISBN isn’t mandatory, but it will ensure that your publication is listed in Books in Print and easily identifiable.

UNSW Library is authorised to allocate ISBNs for UNSW publications. There is no cost to the individual requester.

To qualify for an ISBN from UNSW Library, the publication must:

  • be produced by current staff and/or students of the University of New South Wales
  • be an eligible material as outlined by the ISBN agency
  • have the University of New South Wales or one of its entities as the primary publisher
  • be available for sale or distribution outside the University of New South Wales.

To obtain an ISBN for a non-UNSW publication, contact the Australian ISBN Agency

What is the format of the publication?
If the item is in multiple formats, submit a separate request for each format.

Serial publications such as journals and annual reports do not qualify for an ISBN and would usually have an International Standard Serial Number (ISSN).

An ISSN is a unique code used to identify newspapers, journals, magazines and periodicals of all kinds including annual reports.

You can find more information from the ISSN International Centre. The National Library of Australia is the only agency authorised to allocate ISSNs for journals, newsletters, annual reports etc. in Australia. UNSW Library can’t allocate ISSNs.

This ISBN request service is only available for eligible formats as defined by the ISBN agency.

These include:

  • printed books and pamphlets
  • multi-media kits containing printed material
  • educational videos/DVDs/CD-ROMs
  • e-books and pamphlets
  • educational or instructional software.
